Social Enterprises and Social Purpose ventures: where do you fit? Wednesday, November 16th: 4:30-6:00 pm

Are you a start-up with a cause? Does your non-profit operate with a social purpose? Where exactly do you fit on the social innovation spectrum?

There are distinct business models emerging that enable non-profits to support themselves financially in innovative ways instead of relying solely on grants and donations.

At the same time, new business ventures are popping up that have all the money-making sense of a for-profit enterprise, the social goals of the public sector, and the mission-driven passion of a nonprofit organization. Combined, those attributes put market-based solutions to social problems, generating both financial resources and social value.

Essential to the success of these social enterprise endeavours is an effective business model. We will review a number of models to help workshop attendees determine where they fit one the social innovation spectrum, and what business model is most appropriate to power their mission.

Collaboration for at-risk youth in Guelph- Wellington

10 Carden is bringing together different stakeholders interested in forming a collaboration around engaging youth in social change and entrepreneurship.  In particular, we are interested in reaching out to youth at-risk and from diverse cultural backgrounds.

The next meeting will be a brainstorming session where we'll create a stakeholder map of all youth related work, organizations, events, and partners in our community.

If you'd like to learn more about this initiative, send us an email!

Share Your Sustainability Stories

Do you have a sustainability story to share?  Sustainability Guelph is a website initiative to document the success stories in our community.  It is a celebration of actions that are done with long-term economic, social, and environmental improvement goals in mind. If you have a story to contribute, contact Dorota.

This is a good opportunity for the social change community in Guelph to increase visibility. Check out their website: http://sustainabilityguelph.ca/

Work Together: A Guelph-Wellington Collaboration Website

Coming soon to www.worktogether.ca
There is much interest from organizations and individuals in Guelph and Wellington county to explore and support collaborative work. To contribute, we’re planning a collaboration website, called Work Together: an open marketplace of ideas and resources for those working towards social change in the Guelph-Wellington area. We hope that everyone with interest in collaborating has a pathway to do so—by sharing knowledge, resources, and connections with individuals, organizations, and collaborations.
The site will be designed to provide current information and resources on:

  • Ways to work together, including ideas on collaboration structures, processes, purposes, and outcomes;
  • An accessible list of local collaborations and their focus and work;
  • Ways to do engagement, including ideas on the whys and whens of engaging.
  • An accessible database of reports on local issues produced by local and regional organizations, and relevant government publications.

What’s next?
Tools are being collected and organized, and the website is being constructed. Once the website is functional, you’ll be invited to add your resources, and to begin to make use of the ones there!

Organizers
This is part of a larger effort called Engaging for Change, which aims to foster collaboration and engagement in many sectors across the community. The website working group involves The Research Shop, The Volunteer Centre of Guelph and Wellington, and 10 Carden Street. Others, such as the City of Guelph and the Collaborating for Community Impact project are connected and actively supporting the effort.
